Tariffs are a tax on the middle and lower classes

Tariffs are a tax on consumption. This is essentially a tax on people that earn a paycheck and work a job. That is, most of us. In fact, everyone except the billionaires that now own our goverment.

For lower and middle-class households, consumption of resources (buying goods, houses, cars, groceries, etc.) constitutes the majority of expenses and requires most of their income. The very wealthy, however, spend relatively little of their income or wealth on consumer goods. The vast majority of their wealth is tied up in stocks, businesses, and real estate - none of which are directly affected by tariffs. As a percentage of their income, they don't "consume" all that much. This isn't to say they don't consume; they consume enormously. But they have vastly more income than that. Most people have no concept of the immense wealth our oligarchs possess.

This means that tariffs will function as a direct income tax that will affect the poorest Americans most severely. The middle class will also feel the impact, but the effect will decrease as income increases. Couple this with Trump's plan to use tariff revenue to offset planned tax cuts - most of whose benefits will go to the wealthy and large corporations - and what emerges is a massive tax hike on the lower and middle classes funding a tax break for billionaires. This is what Musk was getting when he bought Twitter and poured $300,000,000 into Trump's campaign. This is what Deutsche Bank is getting for the billions in loans they've given to Trump.

All of this is packaged in an "America First" wrapping that Fox News and other state propaganda outlets will use to sell to their faithful.
