What changes is how much of the labeled dose is still present, how evenly the tablet dissolves, and whether the surrounding ingredients have stayed intact long enough to do their job.

That is why an old bottle in a cabinet is usually a quality question first and a safety question second. If the tablets have been stored well, they may still be close to their label claim months after the printed date. If they have sat in a humid bathroom or a hot car, they can lose potency far sooner than the package suggests. The date on the bottle is only the manufacturer’s promise under tested conditions. Real life is messier.

The printed date is a stability promise, not a cliff

Supplement expiration dates are based on stability testing. Manufacturers keep tablets under controlled heat and humidity, then measure whether the product still meets its label claim over time. The date printed on the bottle is the last point at which the company is willing to guarantee that the tablets still deliver the stated amount of magnesium.

That matters because people often imagine expiration as a switch: good on one day, bad the next. Tablets do not behave that way. Potency declines gradually. A bottle that is three months past date and stored properly may still be quite usable. The practical takeaway is simple: the more complex the compound, the more important the packaging and storage become.

A tablet form with a dense compression and a good coating has an advantage, because there is less surface area exposed to the environment. A loosely compressed tablet with poor coating coverage has more weak points. The same ingredient can age differently depending on how it was manufactured.

That is why shelf life is not just about the ingredient list. It is also about tablet design.

Why potency loss matters more than most people expect

Magnesium is often taken for a very specific reason: sleep support, muscle cramps, constipation, migraine support, or general deficiency prevention. In those use cases, a 15% to 25% potency drop is not trivial.

If a person takes 400 mg nightly for sleep support and the tablets have lost 20% of their labeled strength, the actual dose may be closer to 320 mg. That may be enough to make the supplement feel inconsistent. Someone may assume magnesium “stopped working,” when the real issue is that the bottle no longer contains what the label promised.

When an old bottle deserves immediate replacement

A magnesium tablet past its date is not automatically bad. Physical signs of degradation are more informative than the printed date when a bottle has been stored poorly.

If the bottle is only modestly past date, has been kept cool and dry, and the tablets still look normal, the product may still be reasonably effective. If it is far past date, has spent time in heat or humidity, or shows visible degradation, replacement is the better choice.

That approach is more accurate than treating every expired bottle the same way. A mineral supplement does not behave like spoiled food or a broken prescription drug. Its risk is usually underdosing, not toxicity.

The smartest question is not “Is it expired?” It is “Has this tablet likely kept its dose?” That is the real measure that determines whether the bottle is still worth using.
