The Problem
NYU Langone is cancelling appointments for gender affirming care for youth. This is their capitulation to the bonkers Executive Order 14187.
A round-up of what NYU is telling patients' guardians:
The New York Times spoke with the parents of two 12-year-olds who were slated to receive implants in their upper arms this week that would dispense puberty-blocking medication, Supprelin A, but had their appointments called off.
The father of one of the children said that his child’s doctor told him the cancellation was due to “the new administration,” and directed him to call other hospital systems in NYC or a recommended system in Philadelphia, the report said.
The mother of the second 12-year-old was informed Wednesday, one day before her child’s appointment, that it was canceled as the medical team “[awaited] more guidance,” according to the New York Times.
Tactical Suggestion
NYU is chickenshitting. It's likely because they view the number of patients affected as too small to cause much of an issue. So the answer is to raise the stakes.
At NYU Langone's many practices, customer satisfaction surveys are all over the place. I just got one for an annual exam. You might get one that goes straight into your spam box, or you might ignore it. But now is a good time to do a little trolling.
Hone in a question that looks like this (mine is asking for a rating of 1 to 5)
Likelihood of your recommending our practice to others
Downvote this survey question into oblivion. Note: you shouldn't tank all the ratings, just this recommendation question (which is the one management takes as the vote on their performance). If you like your doctor (I do!) don't make them collateral damage.
My survey had a section for a sentence or two. I made it clear:
This is not regarding my doctor or visit, but I really find it disturbing that you are bowing to the whims of the White House in the care of trans youth.
You might think you're only hurting a small segment of your patients, but when I see stuff like this I don't know whether I should trust you with my care. I am going to be reconsidering my options.
