The City that Would Eat the World

Finished The City that Would Eat the World by John Bierce yesterday. Excellent start to the More Gods Than Stars series and I'm eagerly awaiting the next book.

The characters are well realized and come to life very early on. The banter between the main POV characters is top tier and flows back and forth with ease.

The magic system is unique as far as I'm aware and involves getting blessings from gods. They can be anywhere from something like having perfect toenails, to being able to summon materials made from "godstuff". Gods are created whenever someone of sufficient soul strength dies, and soul strength is gained by receiving blessings or boons from other gods.

The world is actually a moon orbiting a gas giant and has a huge number of cultures that are brushed upon, with the largest/most powerful being the setting of this book. It's a city called The Wall because it's literally a wall based megastructure that was built to take advantage of a blessing that increases life spans.

All in all a very good progression fantasy, and an awesome addition to the author's multiverse setting called The Aetheriad.

The cover is also beyond beautiful! After reading the book you can pick up on a ton of small details hidden in the background.
