I made atauth for a couple of reasons. first, i wanted to make quality of life improvements for my homelab. User management in a bunch of apps isn't fun and SSO helps eliminate that. Second, i think the at protocol ecosystem (atmosphere) has potential to improve our experience using the internet and give us more power over our identity and private data.
Atauth can stand in front of apps that accept OAUTH and those that don't. In the latter case apps without auth can be protected with your atproto identity.
