TootTally Transparency Report (Dec. 2024)

@toottally.com

Hello tooters and boners!

Hope you've all had a wonderful December (and early January). The dev team here in TootTally have had a wonderful end-of-year, and as a show of our gratitude to our players, we've left a special surprise for you in https://toottally.com/rewind (requires login and for you to have played Trombone Champ with the TootTally leaderboard mod on for the past year). We've introduced a page that shows you your stats for the year!

As an example, here's a part of mine! (which can be accessed at https://toottally.com/rewind/1/)

A picture showing TootTally Rewind 2024. It shows that gristCollector has played a total of 20+ hours playing modded Trombone Champ with the most hours being in December.

In the same vein, I'd like to show you some of our internal statistics in this report before getting on to our finances. If you're curious about what happened in TootTally this year, you can read our previous blog post/transparency report as it's a pretty good summary of all the things that's happened this year.

Statistics

Player Activity

Line graph showing accounts created per day on TootTally

There's two major spikes in player activity this year: one in May and one in August. While I've forgotten by now why we've had a major spike back in May, there was a major sale for Trombone Champ back in August due to the Steam Rhythm Fest.

Top 300 Players

Pie chart showing that a huge majority are

Here's an interesting statistic: 33% of the top 300 players on TootTally are from the United States. 23%, for some reason, are marked as from Antarctica.

Well, okay, it's not "for some reason". It's because for a time, TootTally didn't actually keep track of where you signed up from, so their accounts weren't updated to be from where they actually are. When we did the transition to track the country where someone signs up from, we've set everyone by default to Antarctica. Given these many countries though, it might make sense for us to host some sort of Trombone Champ World Cup in the near future. If you're one of these players and would like to set your country away from Antarctica, you can change your country in the Settings page on the site.

Letter Grades

Interestingly enough, we have a considerable amount of S ranks stored. There's even more SSS ranks than there are D ranks, which is very surprising to see. This is for all-time though, not just this year, but this is still an interesting statistic nonetheless.

Request Count and Unique Visitor Count

Cloudflare graph showing the total request and unique visitor counts

According to Cloudflare, we've served 15.68k Unique Visitors this month, serving a total of 7.64m requests (this month being Dec. 12, 2024 to Jan. 11, 2025 when I've written this blog post). This is quite a lot in all honesty.

Server Costs

And now, for the financials.

Infrastructure-wise, there's been a bit of an increase as we move the API server to one with 4 dedicated cores and 8GB of RAM. This is done so that we can have a local instance of Elasticsearch on the server to aid us in searching through the thousands of charts already. As I am new to Elasticsearch stuff, you can tell that search on the site hasn't been the best. I'm working on fixing this issue this month, along with a better way of handling chart updates.

DigitalOcean costs

In terms of Cloudflare costs, costs have been basically the same with December costing $30.80 USD and January costing $30.86 USD.

Patreon

On the Patreon side, we've earned a total of $73.72 USD this December, and an additional $70.82 USD for January.

Patreon earnings

As always, thank you to each and everyone of our Patrons on Patreon for making this possible. If you wish to donate, you can be a Patron on Patreon!

What's Next?

With the start of the new year comes new features (probably). For the start of the year, I'll be focusing primarily on improving site reliability and user experience. For January, there should be improved search and indexing for charts. For February onwards, I'll be looking into improving our Svelte site (which can be found here) to add song search, leaderboards, chart packs, and other custom goodies. The eventual goal here is for TootTally to be its own thing that doesn't completely depend on the Trombone Champ Modding Discord for new chart uploads. You'll be seeing more of our work going in that direction, along with improving the overall experience for the site for new users.

The VR game has been out for quite a while now, and I want to say that it hasn't been forgotten! I've been working on a way to translate the VR movements into TootTally Spectator, but that's stalled due to the work being done on chart updates. Over the next few months, we'll be working on integrating TootTally Leaderboards into the VR game on Steam, and eventually to Meta once we figure things out.

There may be a few difficulty algorithm updates coming down the line as well, so expect some fluctuations in that regard. There will be announcements on the Discord when the time comes.

If you want to help us out, feel free to send out PRs on our GitHub repos and join our Discord!

Thank you for reading our hopefully insightful report. Have a nice rest of your day, and as always thank you for your support! See you this year!
