putin cares about donbas like i care about the weather on mars. the whole protect donbas shtick is just a prop, a sad little fig leaf for the cameras while the real action is happening offstage. if you think this war is about some rusted coal towns, congrats, you just bought beachfront property in donetsk. the kremlin’s wet dream is not a slice of eastern ukraine, its the whole country on a leash, puppeted, neutered, and too scared to even squeak at moscow. donbas is just the crowbar, not the prize.
the donbas distraction
every time you hear about “negotiations” or “territorial concessions,” just know its pure cope. the regime doesnt want a border fix, they want a regime swap. all that “denazification” and “demilitarization” noise? kremlin code for “we want kyiv to crawl.” the territory is a bonus, not the main course. if putin could get ukraine to fold without firing another shot, he’d drop donbas like a bad meme.
the whole “protecting russian speakers” routine is just the latest in a long line of excuses. one year its nato, next year its history, this year its the poor babushkas in luhansk. the only thing putin protects is his own power and the bank accounts of his friends.

russian recruitment is tanking, even with record payouts. theyre throwing millions of rubles at anyone with a pulse, and still the numbers are dropping. volgograd’s offering 3-4 million per contract, and the only thing rising is the number of funerals and tiktok videos of guys getting drafted straight from the bus stop.
the regime can’t even keep the cannon fodder coming. the only thing they mobilize faster than conscripts is excuses.
sanctions, spin, and the circus abroad
meanwhile, the outside world is getting spicy. europe’s got its own circus, with right-wing parties cozying up to moscow, but even that’s not enough to flip the script. sure, afd pulls a big number in saxony-anhalt, but that doesnt magic up more tanks or fix the fact that russia’s best export is still people running away.
sanctions didnt nuke the economy overnight, but they turned “import substitution” into a national meme and “made in russia” into a punchline. the kremlin’s out here laundering war crimes on state tv, but the stains keep showing up in un reports. you cant bleach reality forever, no matter how many times you rerun the propaganda.

the only way out

starve the war machine, keep the sanctions tight, keep the weapons flowing, and let the kremlin run out of bodies, cash, and international patience. theres no shortcut, no magic handshake, no “lets just give them donbas and call it a day.” the only way out is through.
russian tv says theyre defending donbas, but the only thing they defend is their own delusions. putin would trade donbas for a leash on kyiv in a heartbeat. the only thing he hates more than a free ukraine is running out of cannon fodder.
