Running a PDS: Round Two

@ewancroft.uk

So... it's been a while, huh?

Over the last few days, though, I've been on my own PDS again. I followed the guide "Self-host federated Bluesky instance (PDS) with CloudFlare Tunnel" by msz and spun up a server. Honestly, I was kind of surprised that the protocol didn't flag any issues about having a new PDS on the same domain. I ran into similar challenges on the Fediverse with GoToSocial and Akkoma, largely due to ActivityPub's monolithic, server-centric model.

What really excites me, though, is the user-centric and modular model of ATProto. This design lets me host a very lightweight Personal Data Server right at home without the bulk and rigidity of a traditional server setup. It gives me flexibility and control—if I want to power it down for a bit, there's no cascading failure or user-side hiccough (unless, of course, I'm itching to use my AT Protocol account).

This round is a significant upgrade from my first attempt. Back then, I wasn't using a CF Tunnel at all, and although I had a PDS backup script, it was a lot more bare bones. Now, with the integration of a CF Tunnel and a more robust backup routine, my setup feels much more secure and reliable.

I'm thrilled with how far things have come—not only in terms of performance and security but also in embracing a more decentralized, user-focused future. ATProto's modular approach is a game changer for those of us who want to keep things entirely in our own hands.

Anyway, that's all for now. I'm just happy that it's working out so far, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes me next.
