Lost in the crowd

A redditor created his first microblogging account with Bluesky. This user is a bit lost of how to use it. I answered him with an analogy. I hope this helped him !

A small help to get started.

There is a big difference in the concept between Reddit and Bluesky. Let me give you some analogy.

Reddit is like a big venue with many booths and tables where people gather to discuss topics (subreddit).

Bluesky is like a big venue where everyone is talking out loud. Some people would attract other people briefly chatting about one topic. It's a big crowd. To help Blueksy newcomers, starter packs were invented, basically pointing to some people in that big venue. They are supposed to help you because a friend shares them with you. Maybe they are not the best for you.

So you have to find yourself having interesting conversations with that crowd. There are no booths or tables with defined topics you can join.

To mitigate this, people started adding hashtags to their conversations, like little flags above their heads, so their discussion could be better viewed.

Bluesky added Feeds, which are users' curated lists of people and or hashtags you would find at the entrance of that venue. Use them and automatically find people talking about topics you like.

TLDR;

Subscribe to feeds, search or click for hashtags, follow people, but also unfollow them if they aren't interesting. But first try to define topics that are your interest (photography, food, politics, country X or Y, etc...) and search for them in that crowd. I hope this helps!
