Dear Senators Sullivan and Murkowski,
What makes America great?
- Is it robber barons bleeding the people dry in their endless pursuit of obscene wealth, a billionaire class that controls an ever-larger percentage of the nation's wealth, an electoral system where wealthy individuals and corporations exert outsize influence through unrestricted and undisclosed political expenditures? Is it a strong-man leader whose power is unrestrained and unaccountable to Congress, the courts, and the people? Is it minority rule by those holding a particular religious and political view?
- Or, is America great because it fought a bloody war to free itself and its citizens not just from the English monarch of that time, but from all tyrants, forever? Is our nation greatest when its wealth and power are distributed most equally among all the people?
If you hold the former view, the "Big Beautiful Bill" is for you. But it is not for Alaskans, and we will unseat you and the tyrant it coronates.
If you hold the latter view, you will do your utmost to tax the richest Americans MORE than now, instead of funneling tax cuts disproportionately to the wealthiest. With those revenues, you will decrease the deficit instead of saddling future generations of Americans with an impossible debt burden. You will oppose the cuts in the social safety net that condemn millions of Americans to poverty. You will remove the hidden provision that crowns the president king by removing the power of the courts to hold the executive branch accountable through contempt orders.
These views are diametrically opposed; you cannot have it both ways. You are for the billionaires and tyrants, or you are for Alaskans. We are watching, but I also request a reply to this message, with your views on how the bill now before the Senate makes America better or worse, and how you intend to support or modify it.
