Android app behavior with no storage space available

@nicejs.codersquack.nl

This is my first WhiteWind blogpost, and I wanted to share this little list in case anyone thought this was an interesting subject so here we go.

Work well for the most part

  • React Native Apps (Discord, Bluesky...): Work perfectly for the most part, aside from a few minor issues (Bluesky crashes if i open the video player)
  • Google Chrome (version 115.0.5790.139): works perfectly
  • Google Camera: works perfectly (though obviously you can't take any pictures)
  • Samsung Gallery: Works, but editing images are a no-go unless you have around 100MB available
  • Gmail: Works, but crashes if you switch accounts
  • Telegram (version 10.14.0): Works, however will infinitely try to load media/files instead of erroring out.
  • Obsidian (version 1.7.4): You can read files and such but if you try creating one and editing it'll fill the screen with error toast notifications that seemingly can't be dismissed.
  • 1.1.1.1: Crashes sometimes, but works fine otherwise

Constant crashing

  • Reddit: Will crash if you look at it wrong. Opening any image can crash the app, and the preview fails to load half of the time. This also happens to videos.
  • Google Docs: Sometimes it complains if I don't have any space (seems like its when I erase the cache?), crashes when opening a document
  • Google Sheets: Crashes at startup
  • F-Droid (official app): Crashes at startup and in the background

Non-functional

  • Samsung Notes: refuses to let you open any note or interact with anything unless you have I think around 20MB available?
  • Samsung Camera: gives a popup saying you need to free up space and promptly closes (seems like the threshold is around 500MB)
  • YouTube (version 19.09.37): After some time, it behaves as if you have no internet and stops loading content, I assume their http library just gives up.
  • ibisPaint X: Requires (if I remember correctly) 250MB to edit.
  • VLC: Crash after a few seconds of opening a media file (appears to be caused by the 'resume playback' feature)
  • WhatsApp: Refuses to let you do anything at all until you free up around 40-100MB, though if a conversation was already open it won't kick you out until you go back to the home screen

Others

  • DeviantArt: randomly logs me out, for some reason
  • MyBoy!: Does not warn you if the save or savestate fail to write (yes I lost a save because of this)
  • Play Store: Requires almost triple the reported download size to install or update an app.

Note for the Samsung apps: I'm using OneUI Core 3.1, maybe something changed in newer versions.

P.S. These behaviours seem to be wildly inconsistent, sometimes I'll get the reddit app crashing 5 times in a row and other times it'll work fine, and I know they're caused by lack of storage because I'll clear up some space and things immediately start working again
