Russia’s biggest flex used to be “we’re so damn huge, you’ll freeze to death before you reach Moscow.” Now it’s “please stop hitting our gas plants in the Arctic, we can’t cover all this with our three working S-400s.” Ben Hodges called it: size isn’t a shield anymore, it’s a giant, leaky target, and Ukraine’s out here launching drones 3,000 kilometers just to prove the point. The old playbook was “invader gets lost, winter does the rest.” Now it’s “hope the drone runs out of fuel before it finds your oil depot.” Spoiler: it doesn’t.
The whole “vastness is strength” cope is pure nostalgia at this point. Back in the day, Russia could just eat armies for breakfast, let the land swallow them up, and call it a win. But you can’t snowstorm a drone, and you can’t hide your logistics when half your country is a giant Amazon warehouse for military gear. Ukraine’s not marching on Moscow, they’re just burning your Wildberries fulfillment centers and watching you cry to Trump on Telegram. Twenty-plus logistics hubs torched in two months, and suddenly the “second army of the world” is begging for Chinese batteries and Turkish socks.
And let’s talk about that air defense. Russia’s got more territory than sense, and nowhere near enough missiles to cover it. Every time Ukraine hits a new refinery or warehouse, the Kremlin has to play whack-a-mole with their last working radar. You can’t defend everything when your everything is the size of a continent and your budget’s getting rinsed by sanctions and oligarch weddings. Hodges nailed it: the more ground you have, the more ways you can get smacked. “Kill the archer, not the arrow” - Ukraine’s not just intercepting drones, they’re blowing up the factories before the drones even leave the parking lot. That’s not just smart, that’s humiliating.
Meanwhile, the Russian military’s still stuck in the “throw bodies at the problem” era. Gerasimov’s big brain plan was to surround a couple of Ukrainian cities and call it a day. Instead, his troops got rinsed north of Lyman, pushed back over the Oskil, and now even the Z-bloggers are updating their maps with more red than a Soviet parade. The only thing Russia’s advancing is the art of cope. Every time the Kremlin denies a new mobilization, you know it’s coming. “We’re not drafting anyone, trust us.” Sure, and my neighbor’s outhouse is a luxury spa.
But hey, maybe Putin’s got a plan: poke NATO until someone finally slaps back, then scream “see, they started it!” and try to mobilize another hundred thousand guys who’d rather be anywhere else. Hybrid attacks, drone strikes on German airports, rockets falling in Poland - all just to see if anyone’s paying attention. Europe’s finally waking up, but the West still treats Russian “gray zone” bullshit like it’s a weather report. Hodges is right, if you don’t push back, Russia just fills the space with more chaos. Leipzig airport gets hit, Germany shrugs, and the Kremlin takes notes for next time.
And while Ukraine’s torching Russian logistics, the US is busy playing “who can fire the most generals in a week.” Pentagon’s getting cleaned out like it’s a Black Friday sale, and nobody in Congress seems to care. Hodges is out here watching the Secretary of the Army quit, generals get axed for not being MAGA enough, and the only guy left in charge is more interested in pushups than prepping for war. Meanwhile, Trump’s blaming Ukraine for high diesel prices, after starting a war with Iran and blowing up the oil market. The mental gymnastics required to blame Zelensky for your $6 gas are Olympic-level.
And let’s not forget the cherry on top: Don Jr’s wedding, paid for by a Russian oligarch who’s literally on the sanctions list for kidnapping Ukrainian kids. You can’t make this shit up. The president’s son gets a Kremlin-sponsored honeymoon, and the same crew is running “peace talks” with Russia like it’s a real estate deal. Hodges summed it up: if you let someone else pay for the orchestra, don’t be surprised when they pick the music. The only thing more embarrassing than the corruption is how little anyone in power seems to care.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s out here freezing, fighting, and still not giving up. Hodges says he’s ashamed the US isn’t matching that spirit, and honestly, same. The only thing more reliable than Russian poverty is the West’s ability to fumble the bag. But Ukraine’s not waiting for permission anymore. They’re hitting what matters, ignoring the cope, and proving that size without brains is just a bigger target. Russia wanted to be too big to fail, but now they’re just too big to defend.
So yeah, the empire’s got land for days, but all it means now is more places to get roasted. The only thing Russia’s exporting faster than oil is excuses. And if you’re still buying the “vastness equals strength” line, congrats, you’re the target audience for Kremlin TV - just don’t ask where your nearest air defense battery went.
