Pledge for better Transgender Healthcare

Questions from the "Transgress the NGS" campaign.

1. Do you support the calls being made by trans people and organisations for significant improvements to the Irish trans healthcare system?

I support the calls from the trans community for the enacting sweeping changes to the NGS and general trans healthcare in Ireland. It's an embarrassment that Ireland is the worst country in Europe for trans healthcare provision and I will work with trans campaign groups to make change happen.

2. Do you support the introduction of a new system based on the principle of informed consent where basic forms of healthcare such as hormone replacement therapy would be available on prescription from a GP?

I wholeheartedly support the introduction of an informed consent model for trans healthcare in Ireland. The current model is extremely outdated and is actually below WPATH standards and puts too many barriers in place for treatment that can be life-saving.

3. Do you support our campaign’s demand that the National Gender Service be directed to end its current policy of pressuring GPs not to provide basic healthcare, such as blood tests, to trans patients?

I think that the NGS's current campaign is disgraceful, especially since many people are forced into DIY or private services like GenderGP and Gender+ due to the extreme waiting lists for the NGS. Their campaign makes an essential part of transition more dangerous than it needs to be and I support this campaign's demand to end the NGS's policy.

4. If elected, would you push for immediate action in line with these commitments?

I would push for immediate action in line with these commitments.
