Russia’s biggest flex used to be “we’re so damn huge, you’ll freeze

Russia’s biggest flex used to be “we’re so damn huge, you’ll freeze to death before you even see Moscow.” Now it’s “please don’t drone our gas plant in the Arctic, we can’t cover all this with our five working air defense systems.” Congrats, you played yourself. Ben Hodges is out here saying the quiet part loud: the size that let Russia eat armies for breakfast is now the reason they’re getting smacked by drones from a country with less land than Siberia has mosquitoes. Ukraine just hit a gas plant three thousand klicks deep in the snow, and the only thing Russia can do is move their S-400s around like they’re playing whack-a-mole with a blindfold on.

Let’s be real, the old “invaders get lost in the endless steppe” trick only works if you can actually defend the endless steppe. Now it’s just endless targets. Russia’s got more territory than working toilets, but not enough missiles to cover either. Every time Ukraine sends a drone to torch a Wildberries warehouse or a refinery, some vatnik on Telegram posts a cope map and Putin’s generals start playing musical chairs with their last few batteries. The empire’s so big, they can’t even keep track of what’s burning this week. Used to be “General Winter” saved their ass, now it’s “General Can’t Be Everywhere At Once.”

Meanwhile, the z-bloggers are updating their maps like it’s fantasy football, except every week their team loses another chunk of Donbas and the only touchdown is a missile in a shopping mall. Gerasimov’s big brain plan was to surround Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, but the only thing surrounded now is his career prospects. Ukraine’s been running textbook OPSEC, pushing Russians back over the Oskil while the Kremlin’s still pretending nothing’s happening. Putin’s either getting lied to by his own guys or he’s lying to himself, which is honestly the most Russian thing ever.

And the mobilization circus? Every week it’s “no, we’re not drafting anyone, trust us,” which in Kremlin-speak means “get your bags ready, boys.” The regime’s terrified of telling the public they need another couple hundred thousand bodies for the meat grinder, because even the most zombified TV watcher knows that’s not a sign of winning. They’ve built the whole mobilization machine, sent out the draft notices, run the drills, but they’re still waiting for a “provocation” to blame it on. Spoiler: the only thing getting provoked is the patience of every mother with a son under 50.

And while Russia’s busy trying to desensitize Europe with “grey zone” attacks - drones in Leipzig, rockets in Poland, sabotage in Denmark - everyone’s just getting more pissed off. The only thing Russia’s managed to do is convince NATO that maybe it’s time to stop playing nice and actually slap back. But the West is still stuck in “let’s not escalate” mode, so Russia keeps poking, hoping someone finally takes the bait and gives them an excuse for full mobilization. It’s like watching a drunk guy at a bar try to start a fight and everyone just ignores him, but he keeps swinging anyway.

Ukraine, meanwhile, is running a masterclass in logistics warfare. They’re not just hitting tanks and trenches, they’re burning down the distribution centers that keep the Russian war machine running. Wildberries, Ozon, all those shiny new Amazon-wannabe warehouses? Toast. And it’s not just about making Russians wait longer for their AliExpress knockoffs - those places were moving drones, body armor, thermal scopes, all the stuff that keeps the front line from collapsing. You can have a million conscripts, but if you can’t get them boots or bullets, you’re just feeding the mud.

And the best part? Every time Ukraine hits another oil depot or gas plant, Russians cry to Trump about the price of diesel, like Ukraine’s supposed to care that your Lada costs more to fill up. Trump tweets that both sides agreed to stop, but Russia never agreed to shit and Ukraine’s not about to stop just because some guy in Florida is mad about gas prices. The only deals Russia honors are the ones they can cheat on, and everyone knows it.

But let’s zoom out. Hodges is watching all this from Europe, and even he’s embarrassed by how the US is fumbling the bag. The world used to look at America as the grown-up in the room, now it’s “why are you letting a couple of real estate guys run Ukraine policy like it’s a condo flip?” Trump’s got his kid’s wedding paid for by a Russian oligarch who’s literally on the sanctions list for kidnapping Ukrainian kids, and nobody in DC seems to care. The Secretary of the Army quits, generals get fired for not being MAGA enough, and Congress is too busy yelling about pronouns to notice the Pentagon’s on fire.

Meanwhile, young Americans can’t afford rent, can’t get a job, can’t even buy a car without selling a kidney, and the only thing the parties can agree on is blaming each other for the mess. Hodges calls it a lost generation, and he’s not wrong. The tech companies are milking everyone with subscriptions, the cost of living is a joke, and the only people getting rich are the ones already at the top. No wonder nobody trusts the system anymore.

And while the US is busy eating itself, Putin’s out here playing 4D chess with a checkerboard. He’s funding every far-right party in Europe, pushing disinfo on every platform, and hoping the West is too busy fighting itself to notice he’s losing the actual war. But here’s the twist: Russia’s too big to defend, too broke to fix, and too corrupt to change. Every time they try to flex, they just show how hollow the whole thing is. The second army of the world can’t even keep its own gas flowing without getting hit by a drone built in a garage.

So yeah, Russia’s size used to be its shield. Now it’s just a giant target painted across eleven time zones. Ukraine’s figured it out, and every new strike is another reminder that being big doesn’t mean you’re strong. Sometimes it just means there’s more of you to burn.
