The reactive era is here, and the numbers coming out of GUR make it brutally clear: Moscow is pivoting hard because cheap Ukrainian FPV interceptors have turned old piston Shaheds into expensive fireworks. Russia is now pumping out roughly 3000 jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 every month, output that has already overtaken the slower Geran-2, and in the first half of 2026 alone they launched about 1400 of these faster birds, nearly eight times the total from all of 2025.

The Shift to Reactive Threats

Speed has jumped from 180 km/h to 350-600 plus, with some profiles now pushing altitudes of 10 km. That shrinks reaction windows and makes cheap propeller-driven interceptors far less effective. The new models carry seekers and better aerodynamics. The Geran-5 in particular looks more like a mini cruise missile that can even be air-launched.

The advantages are real: less warning, harder to swat with low-cost assets, higher probability of penetration. The downsides are equally obvious. Bigger heat signature and higher unit cost come with a turbojet supply chain that sanctions will eventually choke off. Yet Moscow keeps doubling down, because the alternative is watching 90 percent of their terror weapons get shredded before they reach Ukrainian cities or energy infrastructure.

Ukraine's Closing Gap

On the Ukrainian side the gap is closing faster than Kremlin propagandists want to admit. Palyanytsia has been in combat since 2024. It hits 500-900 km/h with a 650 km range and up to 100 kg warhead, regularly paired in combined strikes. Peklo was designed from scratch in roughly a year and handed to troops by December 2024. It reaches 700 km/h and 700 km range while already being 70 percent Ukrainian-sourced. UOP's UAV-290 and Triada's Bravo are moving through development with even longer legs and heavier payloads. These have moved beyond science projects. They are operational and scaling.

Reactive FPV interceptors like SkyFall's P1-SUN JetKiller, Technari's Mangust, and F-Drones' Litavr+ have become essential. They are the next mandatory layer. The line between long-range drone and small cruise missile is blurring in real time. By the end of this year both sides will be flying far more jet-powered systems. For Ukraine the problem is manageable. The defense industry adapts at startup speed. Ukraine already shifted from 90 percent intercepts on piston Shaheds. The same mindset applied to reactive threats will produce cheap, mass-produced counters before Moscow can retool its entire logistics.

The Strategic Asymmetry

For Moscow the math is uglier. Their vast territory, limited high-quality air defense coverage, and hemorrhaging resources mean they will struggle to protect rear areas that are already burning weekly from Ukrainian strikes. While they pretend to advance by grinding down villages at the cost of thousands of their own men per tiny settlement, their strategic depth is shrinking. Ukraine's long-range program is moving ahead without permission. It is iterating monthly.

The real question is not whether reactive drones create headaches. They do. The question is whether we scale the intercept solution aggressively enough to hit 90 percent again before the Kremlin convinces any more Western isolationists that endless appeasement is cheaper than supporting the side actually destroying the threat.

History already proved that calculation wrong in 1938. Ukraine does not need to repeat the lesson. The adaptive defense complex and the clear strategic necessity mean the interceptors will arrive in volume. Moscow's ability to shield its own territory from the same technology it is throwing at Ukraine is far more doubtful. That asymmetry lets Ukraine end the war on its own terms.
