Trump accused Zelenskyy of deceiving him over Starlink permission for deep strikes inside Russia, but the Ukrainian leader pushed back with the straight story: his Defense Ministry had briefed him that SpaceX had already given the green light at the technical level, leaving only political approval from the US side. What followed was a collision between wartime urgency, billionaire ego, and the transactional lens of Washington.
The Meetings and the Reversal
Zelenskyy sat down with Trump and laid out how neutralizing launchers and logistics deeper inside Russia would shrink Moscow's ability to prolong the war. The delegation even tried calling Musk mid-meeting, but it was too early on the West Coast and no one answered. They agreed the Americans would follow up, while Zelenskyy lined up funding talks with von der Leyen and Costa, north of a billion euros, because this capability actually matters.
Then came the second meeting. Trump told Zelenskyy he got played because Musk flat-out refused. Zelenskyy circled back to his own ministry, and they conceded maybe the information was off. Musk's line, according to the reporting, is that he wants the war stopped, not extended. Zelenskyy still thinks Musk can be brought around with better arguments and says the feedback has already started to improve.

Starlink Is Not Neutrality
Starlink is a commercial service that has become de-facto infrastructure for Ukrainian drone operators. Denying its use over Russian territory while Russian Iskanders, Kalibrs, and Shaheds fly freely from that same territory is not neutrality. It is managed escalation that always tilts against the defender.
For two years the West has treated long-range strike as some dangerous taboo instead of basic military logic. You cannot win a defensive war by agreeing that the aggressor keeps a safe rear area the size of a continent. Every time Ukraine finds a creative way around the restrictions, using air relays, third-party components, or sheer ingenuity, the goalposts move again. Musk's earlier quiet nod that this could happen if Trump ordered it, followed by the sudden reversal, only confirms what Kyiv has already learned through experience: personal relationships and backchannel assurances are worth less than a Ukrainian soldier's blood when domestic American politics or a tech mogul's peace rhetoric intervenes.
The Framing and the Real Deception
Trump's framing that he was "tricked" is typical deal-maker language. It shifts responsibility onto the guy fighting for survival instead of the one who controls the switch. Zelenskyy did what any wartime leader should do. He took the best information available from his defense officials, presented the strategic case, and tried to lock in a capability that directly reduces Russian missile salvos on Ukrainian cities. It is honesty and advocacy under extreme pressure.
History from 2014 onward proves otherwise. Every pause without degrading Russia's military-industrial base has been used to rearm and attack again. Starlink for targeting deep strikes is not escalation. It is correcting an artificial asymmetry that never should have existed.
The Path Forward
Musk can change his mind when the argument is put in terms of raw American interest. Cheaper Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, airfields, and ammo depots mean fewer American taxpayer dollars and less risk of direct confrontation later. Europe has already signaled it will help pay. The only missing piece is the political green light that does not treat Ukrainian victory as a threat to "peace" but as the only realistic foundation for it.
This episode exposes the gap between Kyiv's operational urgency and the transactional lens applied in Washington. Ukraine will keep adjusting, keep improvising, and keep reminding everyone that letting Russia dictate the depth of the battlefield is a losing strategy for the entire European security order. The drones only care about a precise, predetermined target, about signal and coordinates. Give them both, or admit that "ending the war" is code for letting Russia win it slowly.
