Poland's right-wing populist machine has once again shown that historical truth only matters to them when it can be fired as electoral ammunition. The Institute of National Remembrance sits firmly under the thumb of Nawrocki and the PiS orbit, while local authorities in voivodeships controlled by PiS and Confederation keep blocking Ukrainian search teams from conducting exhumations of Ukrainian victims of the Volyn tragedy on Polish soil.
A Pattern of Bureaucratic Sabotage
Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Bondar had to go on RMF 24 and publicly beg for even one permit. Ukraine, by contrast, has systematically issued permissions on a reciprocal basis. President Zelenskyy personally pushed to accelerate Polish requests. The head of Ukraine's Institute of National Memory, Alfiorov, established a clear policy: when a Polish request arrives, it gets approved without obstruction. Over a dozen such permits have already been granted.
Remember the smear campaign in Poland when Alfiorov was appointed? They painted him as some Azov-linked threat who would sabotage Polish interests. A familiar mistake. Manufacture outrage, wait for the emotional response, then monetize it at the ballot box.
Ukrainian diplomacy has navigated this minefield with discipline. It refuses to gift PiS and Confederation easy electoral wins while still protecting national dignity and the historical record. The policy is consistent: if you want permits, here they are. If problems arise, we talk. Pressure and manipulation will be ignored. That restraint is not weakness. Choosing not to react is the mature move that denies the provocateur what he craves.
The Adolescent Analogy
Think about it like dealing with a tantrum-throwing adolescent who keeps poking you because he needs the fight to feel important. The more you stay calm, the more he unravels. Meanwhile, Ukraine's state institutions demonstrate they can separate painful history from the strategic necessity of good relations with a key neighbor. That matters especially while Ukraine fights for survival against a genocidal imperial project next door.
The contrast is instructive:
- One side weaponizes memory for domestic votes.
- The other side treats memory with seriousness but refuses to let it derail larger security realities.
- Moscow's information warfare apparatus loves nothing more than intra-European historical grievances that distract from the ongoing slaughter in Ukraine.
Every manufactured Polish-Ukrainian spat is oxygen for Kremlin narratives that paint Eastern Europe as eternally tribal and incapable of unity.
The Adults Continue Working
Kyiv's current course is correct. Stay consistent. Keep granting permits. Keep the working group functional. Keep the public tone measured. Let the Polish right exhaust itself throwing tantrums against Ukrainian restraint. History will record who actually sought truth and who treated graves as political props. The adults continue working. The children can keep screaming.
Deny populists the conflict they need to survive. You simply refuse to become what they accuse you of being. Ukraine has been doing exactly that. It works.
