Trump's latest brainfart should terrify every serious observer. He openly says a Russian attack on NATO doesn't worry him. Then he pivots to renaming the Pacific Ocean like some deranged real-estate developer marking territory on a napkin. Leadership has failed. This is the terminal stage of political decay in two nuclear powers at once.
The Regression of Two Geriatric Powers
Compare it to 2021. Back then Moscow still pretended to negotiate, even if we all knew the Kremlin's strategic goal was the erasure of Ukrainian statehood. Washington still projected competence, however flawed. Today one geriatric dictator in the Kremlin points at medieval maps and denies Ukraine ever existed. The other geriatric in the White House treats ocean names like campaign swag. Both have regressed into performative dementia. The vacuum they created is being filled by whoever can still string two coherent sentences together.
That leaves China and the EU as the only adults left in the room. Beijing doesn't even need to lift a finger. It simply repeats the phrase "rules-based international order" like a mantra. Suddenly half the Global South starts nodding along. Remember when the same crowd viewed China as the imminent threat ready to swallow Taiwan and shatter global stability? Now Russia has invaded Ukraine. America is busy with its own erratic adventures. Beijing looks almost statesmanlike by comparison. The sheer speed of this role reversal is dizzying.
Structural Decay and the Black Swan Presidency
The deeper problem is structural. Trump's behavior has become so unhinged that his supporters treat drooling on camera as "owning the libs" rather than a national security emergency. A prominent American political scientist put it bluntly: if Trump actually lost his mind, most of the country wouldn't even notice. The man controls the world's most powerful military and the nuclear codes, which is unsustainable. Any serious mid-term or long-term planning by allies now has to treat Washington as a black swan event that can detonate without warning.

For Ukraine this particular Trump statement about NATO is perversely useful. Putin is watching the same spectacle and calculating that NATO has never been weaker. Europe is still rearming in slow motion. The current US president offers no orderly off-ramp, just crude abandonment that creates a dangerous power vacuum. Putin can be forgiven for thinking now is the perfect window. Moscow's imperial nostalgia is a concrete political force. It is concrete policy: restore the Soviet sphere or die trying. Every time Trump mocks Article 5 he feeds that calculation.
Europe's Awakening and Ukraine's Arsenal
Europe's awakening matters more than ever. We cannot outsource our survival to a superpower that treats alliances like timeshares. Ukraine has already proven it will do the heavy lifting if given the tools. Our long-range strike capabilities are expanding fast. Moscow is losing 35,000 men a month. Its logistics are burning daily. By the end of 2026 our mid-range systems will have multiplied several times over. Crimea is becoming an isolated liability.
We are building domestic air defense. We are licensing Patriots. We are fielding Gripens. We are turning the entire venue into a demonstration that hostility brings no reward.
The Cost of Freedom and the Path Forward
The old line that Ukraine exists only because of Western help misses the point. We are grateful for real support. But we have paid for every square kilometer of freedom with Ukrainian blood while the rest of the continent slept peacefully behind our lines. If Moscow breaks through here, the next NATO border state becomes the target within months. That is practice. Russian imperial behavior has followed this observable pattern for centuries.
The West needs to stop managing decline and start investing in victory on the only front that actually matters right now. Renaming oceans while the map burns is inevitable. Moscow's project ends when it is militarily defeated on Ukrainian soil. All else is mere distraction. We have the will. Reality will eventually force a decision on whether Washington and Moscow's decaying political cultures drag everyone else down first.
