Russia is running a global recruitment scam that now reaches deep into the Spanish-speaking world, luring men from Latin America and Spain with false promises of safe, high-paying jobs only to send them to die on the front lines in Ukraine.
The Spanish-Language Bait
Ferran Barber, a journalist at El Espanol, traced how Russian agents use Spanish-language ads to lure men out of Latin America and Spain. The pitch is simple: work in Spain, high salaries, safe jobs far from the front. One man, Matias, was promised a job as a cook. Two months later he died in Ukraine.
The scheme is methodical. Ads target the huge Spanish-speaking population worldwide, often using fake job offers in Spain and never mentioning military service. Agents work from prepared scripts, and recruits get rushed through the process so they have no time to consult their families or think through what is actually being offered.
The Promises and the Reality
The promises are specific: very good salaries, work away from combat zones, Russian citizenship, and significant payments to families if the recruit is killed or seriously wounded. None of it is real.
Recruits get minimal training, then they are sent straight to the hottest sections of the front. When they are killed, their families get little or nothing. One family traveled to Rostov-on-Don to recover the body of their relative. They were handed a stack of other death certificates instead of a body, and told to distribute them to other families.
A Broader Industrial Process
Russia has used this pattern elsewhere. Recruitment ads in Russian social media feeds promise signing bonuses of 200,000 rubles. Chinese-language ads offer sign-on bonuses from $7,750 to $21,000. The Russian Ministry of Defense produces polished recruiting videos asking what Russian men are made of.
Increasingly, they are made of foreigners deceived into dying for a country that will not even return their remains.
The Spanish-language operation is part of a broader pattern: an industrial process built on lies, rushed decisions, and broken promises. The men who respond are trying to support their families. Russia sees them as disposable material.
The Only Defense
The only defense is exposure. Every community where these ads appear needs to know what happens after the first message is answered.
