Thirty-five years after Kuwait and the Madrid conference, the US is stepping back from a Middle East it never actually managed to remake. The Economist has finally noticed that a hegemon mistakes presence for strategy.
The End of the Firefighter Role
The framing is almost apologetic. America will still sell weapons.
It will still protect Israel and still mediate, but it will no longer be the firefighter, which is a polite way of saying the firefighter burned down half the neighborhood and now wants credit for leaving quietly.
The numbers tell the story.

- Iraq took four years to reach that same verdict
- Iranian inflation approaches 100%, the rial keeps collapsing
- Indirect US-Iran talks in Doha remain far apart
A Transactional Order Collapses
Nobody is winning. Tehran cannot break the blockade.
Washington cannot break Tehran. The Gulf states are absorbing the economic shock.
The security architecture was always transactional: oil flows, Israeli security, American bases. There was never a democratic project.
There was never an economic integration plan. So when the transaction stops paying, the system collapses.
The post-American order in the region will be built by whoever can actually deliver capability, not by whoever holds the oldest base lease.
The Vacuum Is Filled by Capability
And that part deserves attention. The vacuum is not being filled by Europe, which is too weak, or by China, which has no expeditionary habit.
It is being filled by ad hoc arrangements. Saudi Arabia is signing a defense pact with Pakistan and Turkey.
Gulf states are buying Chinese missiles and Turkish drones. The UAE signed a ten-year deal for Ukrainian drones, including joint production.
Disruption Rewards Producers
It belongs in the main text. The Economist calls the coming period chaotic. Correct.
But disruption has a bias. It rewards states that can produce, adapt, and fight.
Ukraine is an active participant in this realignment. We are a supplier.
We are a partner. We are a proof of concept for what a serious defense industry looks like with independence from Washington.
