The middle strike campaign has stopped being a question of range. It is now a question of volume, and that volume has shifted decisively in Ukraine's favor.

The Shift to Mass Strikes

In March alone, Ukrainian forces conducted nearly 350 strikes at depths of 30 to 120 kilometers behind the front line. By late April, Ukraine had contracted five times more middle strike systems than during the entire previous year. The working depth has not changed much.

What changed is how many systems can operate there simultaneously, and how often they can hit. Officer Serafym "Falko" Hordiienko of the 1st Unmanned Systems Center frames the shift bluntly. The question now is how a drone reaches the target.

The question is whether Ukraine can strike continuously enough to render the entire zone uninhabitable for Russian military operations.

The Economics of Deep Strikes

The economics made this possible. Long-range drones were once rare and expensive, reserved for high-value targets like air defense systems and electronic warfare platforms. Cheap drones with Starlink connectivity changed the calculation.

Mass production turned deep strikes from exceptional events into systematic infrastructure denial. Destroying one truck is a tactical result. Making a supply route too dangerous to use is an operational one.

Ukraine is now building the capacity to do that everywhere, all the time.

Operation Vivaldi and the 120-Kilometer Kill Zone

Operation Vivaldi showed what that means in practice. The 3rd Army Corps first isolated a zone roughly 50 kilometers behind the front, then extended the effect to 120 kilometers.

The strikes forced the logistics of Russia's 144th Motor Rifle Division further into the rear. Evacuation routes for damaged equipment grew by approximately 250 kilometers. An operational defeat was imposed without a single breakthrough on the ground.

Paralyzing Donetsk Airport

The same logic applied to Donetsk airport, which Russia had converted into a droneport for Shahed launches, complete with launch positions, fuel storage, warehouses, and engineering equipment. The 1st Center did not aim for one spectacular hit.

It ran three weeks of continuous pressure. The goal was to render the entire site too dangerous to operate. Falko's assessment is direct: the airport was fully paralyzed.

The Next Breakthrough

The next breakthrough will not come from adding another 50 kilometers of range. It will come from making 120 kilometers of Russian rear area permanently lethal.

Ukraine is now building the capacity to do that everywhere, all the time.
