Kept you waiting, huh?
Hello! It's been a while. I did, in fact, NOT forget about the polyworld. I've actually been rather busy with it, and I'm excited to share what I've been doing. In the last post, I showed off a little bit of the world conversion process, a preview of the rotunda, and (foolishly) ended with a statement promising an update soon after. That being said, I should address the long pause properly. The truth is, I found it hard for these rudimentary versions to keep my attention. Which was expected, don't get me wrong. Just not to the extent that it did... I was having fun expressing my creativity, and honestly, it was one of the few times I actually found building fun in Minecraft. I just needed something more.
Which is why, when I returned to the polyworld, I decided to skip straight to the introduction of survival. I know, it kinda defeats the whole point, and I believe I touched on this in the last post. Ultimately, it is my world, and I believe this was just the push I needed.
Look! Proof!
Not only did it respark my interest in the project, it also saved me the hassle of potentially losing progress if something went awry during the convoluted conversion process (the conversion to Infdev from Indev is a little trickier when you introduce chests). There is also one more thing I wanted to clarify. To "penalize" myself, I upped the day count to 50 (16 hours, 40 minutes), which is about the amount I probably would have added originally, but it also preserves the original intention. With that being said...
What have I been up to?
Well... not as much as I'd want :P
One thing very apparent in these older versions is how slow everything is. A pattern that will continue for quite a while. But, the first thing I did was complete the rotunda.
I'm actually really glad with how it turned out. As you can see from the screenshot, I completed it before my time with RD was over.
Below is what I saw when I first opened the world after the merging and converting.
If you look carefully, you can notice four different kinds of world generation (Indev left, Late classic middle, early classic right, RD bottom). I spent most of my first day just ogling at everything I've built so far in a new perspective.
Interestingly, the clouds are more detailed in this version
After that, I spent a lot of my time gathering resources and mining for diamonds. Admittedly, which is what took up most of my time. The biggest things I did accomplish were adding details to the town and starting a bridge to the Indev island. I did, however, continue marking the world generation (which is still a work in progress)
In this version, seeds are initially dropped by tiling grass, similar to how it is in Better than Wolves. I wonder if that is an intentional homage to Infdev?
Ore gen is silly in classic
Coming soon
The idea behind the markings is that they are also made with blocks introduced in that version (or around that time). Indev will be mossy cobble and Infdev will be bricks. Technically, bricks were added in classic, but early infdev versions featured a brick pyramid that would naturally generate.
As you may of been able to tell, the time ran out in the middle of making the labels. Don't worry, I have a bunch of ideas I still want to flesh out. Hopefully, I will be able to show more off next time. But before I go, I did want to mention something I've been working on outside of Minecraft. I've slowly been working on reimplementing my homelab, and down the line, the hope is to launch my own self-hosted blog. So who knows, maybe next time will be on a different site? ;)
