Supernote Nomad A6 X2 screen tests

This post will be documenting various screen tests of the Supernote Nomad A6 X2. Pictures should not be assumed to be perfect given I don't have professional cameras to take the real world pictures of the screen, but I'll attempt to get good clarity and good lighting. In general the screen displays pure black VERY well, and pure white looks like slightly creamy/tan paper. Mottling in the images is a result of the FeelWrite 2 screen protector, which has a matte finish and results in only minor distortions. Underlying ink is crisp, especially on the border between pure black and white.

Foreward

It seems like there's a bug on Chauvet 3.20.29 and earlier, where the lock screen displays images differently compared to apps in the OS. I'll update here if I can figure out a way to fix that. See the section "32 grays" for a comparison.

Unless otherwise indicated, pictures were taken with my phone camera: Moto Note 5G stylus smartphone, utilizing the 50 MP f/1.8 - 2micrometer "ultra pixel" camera package.

Screen appears to display 0% to 20% (black) as the same color, and 90% to 100% (white) as the same color.

Simple gradient

Reference image: Manually generated gradient

Image: Full picture of screen. 16 distinct bands can be identified in-person, the camera washed out some of them. The non-uniform scale can be seen well in this image, with the lower 1/5th blacks all being the same.
Not visible in the image: grayscale appears to be done via hardware dithering, so firmware updates might change this gamut. This is an issue with the way the OS renders shades, see the note in the foreword about shades.

32 Grays.png

Reference image: evenly distributed 32 grays

Image: Full picture of screen, image is displayed with default image viewer. Shades up to #474747 are all the same black. Shades #DFDFDF to #FFFFFF are all the same white. The remaining 14 shades vary between one and two source image shade per displayed shade.

Image: Full picture of screen, image is displayed on the lock screen. Every two shades on the source image are combined into one displayed shade.
