This is Impressive

Bluesky, and ATProto respectively, are two things I've kept an eye on over the years but never fully paid attention until Elon crippled Twitter's block function. Many artists that I follow were starting to migrate to Bluesky, probably due to the familiar interface and better content filtering, but I resisted. Mostly due to my huge presence on the ActivityPub-based Fediverse. Of course, this has come with some literal costs.

Anyone who goes to my domain knows that I self-host my own Mastodon instance. I used Mastohost because I didn't have hardware set up, at the time. After the first wave of people made their way to the Fediverse after Elon brought Twitter, my tiny little instance's storage capacity took a massive hit that I didn't expect and raised the monthly bill quite a bit. Nothing too bad, don't get me wrong, but still quite annoying. I've been meaning to migrate, but that means losing all but my followers.

Bluesky is a completely different beast. With account data scattered across the web (if I'm reading correctly), no one truly owns it. The clients provide the experience, with Bluesky being the reference. Relays help subsidize the large volumes of data that clients need but, in most use cases, are not reliant on them. Migration is much more straightforward and actually moves data. However, it is not recommended because it isn't bidirectional at the moment.

Unlike Mastodon, Bluesky is still relatively young. Yet, it's a familiar interface, and moderation features make it understandably appealing. I had intended to start fresh, self-host Mastodon on my own hardware and new domain, barkpack.social, then migrate there, buuut the bandwidth and storage costs would be insane. I might host a PDS and Bluesky client instead.
