The molecular visualization software VMD has released a major update, VMD 2.0. This new version is a complete overhaul of the software, with a redesigned user interface, a new plugin system, and significant performance improvements.
Key new features include:
- Faster secondary structure calculations: VMD 2.0 can now handle large systems of up to 1 million atoms.
- High-performance glycan visualization: Glycan rendering is up to 1,000,000 times faster.
- Accelerated surface visualization: Surface visualization algorithms are 10 times faster.
VMD 2.0 is currently in its alpha release stage, with new versions planned for release every month throughout 2025. The final release will include a fully overhauled plugin system, improved usability, and expanded functionality.
