Hello everyone. Welcome to my Kingmaker writeup. I am the GM of a four-player party playing Kingmaker in Pathfinder 2nd edition, and I have some...opinions. What follows here is a small write up on what I would do differently if I were to run this campaign again. This also functions as advice for GMs who wish to run Kingmaker themselves.
If you haven't read the previous parts, feel free to start at Part 0 and get up to speed.
Part 2: Stolen Lands
I did not have Caspar in the party at this time, so I let my players substitute in one of the companions to fight with them so I didn't have to balance down the encounters (as it's easier to make something harder whereas it's difficult to make something easier). One change I had noticed was that they had given Jaethal an undead companion that was a Skeletal Mount. This is again going off of my memory, but giving Jaethal a large movement speed upset the battle against the Thorn River bandits in their favor, making it quite easy to take them all out.
Another note I'll mention here is that the Stag Lord fight was probably easier than it should have been since I didn't know that Frightened doesn't stack from Demoralize (as in if the creature is already frightened 1 from a previous Demoralize, and a player rolls successfully on another Demoralize, the creature doesn't go to frightened 2). My players still enjoyed it, despite that ruling I had to give out the next session.
Relevant House Rules: Hexploration
- During Hexploration, we will be omitting the Map the Area and Fortify Camp options. Map the Area only makes sense in heavily obscured/difficult terrain which is not present in this AP, and Fortify Camp is replaced by the Camping ruleset.
- The cost for the Travel activity increases by 1 (to a maximum of 3) when travelling through a hex that contains a river but no bridge.
- Hexes that contain settlements reduce their Travel cost by 1 if the settlement contains Paved Streets.
Relevant House Rules: Camping
I decided to use the Camping subsystem, and created an entirely seperate guide for it. My one change I would make is to scrap the entire Influence system during Camping and instead make something more natural happen. Something similar to either Bioware companions, Baldur's Gate 3 companions, or the Kingmaker CRPG.
Feel free to head over to Part 3 to read the next part of the campaign.
